Why Christians Need Deliverance: Notes

Notes:

Why Christians Need Deliverance

“Possessed” - implies ownership;
“you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. 1 Corin. 6:20.
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,” - Col. 1:13

“Oppressed” might be a better word – a word that means affected by, or in some way deceived by or being manipulated by the powers of darkness.
“Can have a demon”

1 Corinthians 10:20
No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.  (2 Cor. 6:14-16)

And He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.  But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.  When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”  But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” Then he and his disciples went to another village. (Luke 9:52-56)

Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns." (Matt. 16:23).

Acts 5:3-5
Peter asked, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back some of the money you got for the land?  As long as it remained unsold, wasn’t it your own? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? So how could you have thought of doing what you did? You didn’t lie only to men, but also to God!”  When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear seized everyone who heard about it.

Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Eph.4:27)

2 Corinthians 7:1
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.  For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.  We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Eph. 6:12)

Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:26)

[Present in a way that should not be] "Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7

Our Discernment and Authority in Christ -

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith." 1 Pet. 5:8-9

“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” Luke 10:19

Matthew 16:18
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8

That through death he might destroy (abolish) him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. Heb. 2:14

Colossians 2:15
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, (Eph. 2:6)

Because as He is, so are we in this world. - 1 John 4:17

Mark 16:16-18
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Luke 10:17
The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

John 14:11
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” (Mark 9:23) – [context of casting out a demon out of a man's boy]

Matthew 10:1
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.

Matthew 17:19-20

Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:13)

“Do not fear them, for the Lord your God is the one fighting for you.” Deut. 3:22
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Josh. 1:9

The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. - Deut. 28:7

"This is what the Lord says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's." 2 Chron. 20:15

Through you we push back our enemies;
    through your name we trample our foes.
I put no trust in my bow,
    my sword does not bring me victory;
but you give us victory over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame. - Ps. 44:5-7
